The Couture French Jacket: Design possibilities – Jaqueta inspirada em Chanel: Feitios possíveis

EN Summary: Analysis of the different design possibilities that I’m considering for my Couture French jacket: closure (centered hooks&eyes or buttons on overlap), fringe orientation, pockets with buttons or not, jacket length, sleeve length, etc. (image from blog.bergdorfgoodman.com illustrating the new Little Black Jacket by Chanel).

EN: Having chosen the fabric (black boucle from GorgeousFabrics.com and black silk habotai for the lining), the buttons (vintage passemanerie) and the trim (suede fringed on one side), it’s time to begin considering the possibilities. There are a few options that are more or less settled by now: the jacket length (four to six inches below the natural waist), three-quarter sleeves (really love them on short jackets because the sleeve cuff is leveled with the jacket’s hem), round collarless neckline and four pockets. The drawing above illustrates the two main possibilities that I’m considering (note that I only got nine buttons). Basically it all comes down to deciding the trim orientation: towards the jacket or outwards.

EN: With the fringe towards the jacket I’s be able to follow very closely the construction steps of the Susan Khalje’s video class “The Classic French Jacket”, in which I have enrolled and highly recommend, the jacket’s front closure would be hooks&eyes. I’ll be using her pattern regardless of the chosen option anyway; I just need to add the overlap to the font edges id I decide for the button closure. In this case (fringe towards the jacket) I would skip the trim on the bottom edge of the jacket (I think the fringe may look awkward facing up on this edge, but I’m not sure) ; on the sleeves I’d also have to try both options. Since I wouldn’t be using buttons along the center front, I’d have the possibility of adding them to the pockets instead (in this case I would sew working buttonholes by hand on the pockets).

EN: In this case (fringe facing outwards), the fronts would have to be overlapped (two fringes meeting on the center front wouldn’t look good). Buttons and hand-worked buttonholes as per explained by Claire Shaeffer in her book and accompanying DVD “The Couture Cardigan Jacket "(which I also highly recommend) would imply reinforcing the center front to prevent snagging and fraying on the buttonhole area. On both options I’d also like to make hand-worked buttonholes on the cuffs (and again some extra reinforcement will be needed in this area). In this case there aren’t enough buttons for the pockets, but that’s ok (many Chanel jackets didn’t have buttons on the pockets either) I must say I’m leaning towards this last option (it looks more like the jacket that has inspired me in the first place), more on that later!

Logo veremos!

Tany, this sounds like it is going to be lovely. The trim looks very interesting.

Hola Tany!
